Fengyao Record: capturing beasts and building a roster
The Fengyao Record is a collection system with a pity counter, not a gacha. Understanding the merge rate and the failed-capture progress bar is most of the work.

The Fengyao Record is the game's beast-collection system, and it is the one place where a free player can make steady progress by planning rather than by spending. The rules are explicit: a fixed beast count, a known pity counter, and a merge rate that turns surplus low-tier orbs into higher-tier attempts. The corpus has no drop table, so this page sticks to the mechanics.
What is the Fengyao Record?
It opens at Spirit Transformation and contains 23 beasts. Each beast must be defeated in the world before its soul can be captured, so the system has two gates: the realm unlock and the hunt itself. Beasts you have not met cannot be captured, even if you have orbs ready.
The record is finite and the beast list fixed, so treat it as a completion track, not an endless grind. The pity counter means no attempt is wasted, and the merge rule means low-tier orbs are never dead inventory.
How does soul capture work?
The loop is short: defeat the beast, then use a Fengyao Orb on it. Every orb grants three judgements. A judgement can succeed or fail, and the orb is consumed either way. This is why orb quality matters more than quantity — a single high-tier orb concentrates three chances on one target.
Do not spend orbs on a beast you have only just met and cannot yet use. The record's value comes from matching a captured soul to a build, and an unmatched soul is inventory weight.
What are the orb tiers and merge rate?
There are three tiers: blue, purple and gold. The merge rule recorded in the corpus is simple: five blue orbs become one purple orb. The corpus does not state a purple-to-gold merge, so this page does not invent one.
The top-grade orb is described as three judgements at a 30% success chance. Read that literally: three separate rolls, each at 30%, not a 90% guaranteed capture. If your plan depends on landing a specific beast this week, plan for the possibility that all three rolls fail and the pity bar saves you next time.
What happens when a capture fails?
Failure is not a loss. Two things happen:
- Progress accumulates. When it reaches 100, the next capture attempt is guaranteed. This is the pity counter, and it is the reason a run of bad luck still ends.
- You receive a residual soul. Residual souls feed essence-soul ascension, so a failed capture still returns a usable material.
The optimal play follows: attempt the beast you actually want, accept failures as progress, and never spend a high-tier orb on a beast you would not field.
How do you build an essence soul?
An essence soul separates into two parts: a body and a skill. They are independent, and the rule that matters is attribute matching — the body and skill must share an attribute to combine. Attribute-less pieces are the universal exception and fit anything.
In practice, this means collecting a good body is only half the job. A perfectly matched skill on the wrong attribute body is scrap, while a neutral body can carry almost anything. When you sort a week's captures, sort by attribute first and quality second.
Which beast suits which build?
Four named beasts cover the four roles in the corpus:
| Beast | Role | Build that wants it |
|---|---|---|
| Azurewood Luan | Evasion | Fulong sword |
| Earth Spirit Colt | Control | Unassigned in the corpus |
| Black Water Whale | Damage amplification | Fire |
| Blaze Cloud Hound | Crit | Thunder |
Thunder builds raise the crit beast because their damage window is built on critical hits. Fire builds raise the amplifier because burn needs to hit harder, not more often. Fulong sword builds raise evasion because they need to survive the approach to melee range. The control beast has no assigned build, so there is no honest recommendation to give — take it if your own fights show a control gap.
The academy side of this pairing is covered in the faction chapter; the capture rules above are what you need to act on it.
What does a weekly routine look like?
Spend the week accumulating orbs and the weekend hunting. That is the pattern the corpus recommends, and it fits the pity system: batching attempts concentrates progress on a few targets instead of scattering it across the whole record. Clear the beasts you can actually field first, then widen.
Two things to avoid: spending orbs the moment they drop on whatever beast is nearby, and chasing a beast whose soul you cannot equip because you lack the matching attribute. Both convert progress into inventory clutter.
Where do the beasts come from?
Most are tied to world locations, and a few have specific spawn conditions. The exploration chapter lists the reported hidden spawns and flags which coordinates are community-sourced rather than verified.
